Child abuse is when a parent or caregiver, through action or failure to act, causes injury, death, emotional harm or risk of serious harm to a child. According to The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, as amended by the CAPTA Reauthorization Act of 2010, at a minimum, child abuse and neglect is defined as, Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation; or An act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm (Children s Bureau, 2010). The law recognizes a child as being any person who is under the age of 18. The law is broken into 2 sections, and each section treats the idea of child maltreatment in different ways. Criminally, those who abuse children are able to be arrested and prosecuted in court. Civil statutes say that people who suspect a child of being abused are mandated to identify and report it. Mary Ellen’s case, in 1874, was one of the first cases of child abuse recorded. According to American Humane Association (2013), she was being abused by her stepmother. There was no such thing as child protective services or the department of family services. There was only the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. Her story led to the founding of the New York Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Children (American Humane Association, 2013). Question: Describe about the Leadership for Business Prevented Problems. Answer: What you learned about yourself? The course has enabled me to recognize my leadership skills and has encouraged me as a result to flame into fire the attributes of a leader that I possess. Some of the leadership qualities that I personally possess: Dependability: I think one of the most important attribute of a leader is that they can be trusted, they can be relied upon. A leader tries to introspect in the face of problems to see how better he/ she could have prevented this problem. A leader takes responsibility for his/ her own mistakes. I am someone who introspects a lot. I always look inwards when there is a fault. I see how better I could have done in order to prevent such a problem. Integrity: My family values have played a vital role in the building up of my character. My dad is someone who never believed in lying. Even from my childhood he would never sign my sick leave diary if I was lying in it. These values have worked in me and made me who I am. I do not believe in lying neither do I cheat people for benefit. I have always observed that doing the right thing under pressure is the toughest thing but it pays off fairly well. I believe that I can be trusted, be it with finances, privacy of information or even a responsibility and if I give my word I will do it. In fact I would try to outdo what I promised. Confident: I would not say I am someone who is very confident of my abilities. That could be rooted in the knowledge that we are all flawed and there is still room for improvement in all of us. I cannot say I am extraordinarily good! Therefore I am apologetic sometimes which may come off as being less confident or unskilled. But if you actually go past my humility and watch me work you would probably be surprised to see me excel. I am not extraordinary, but I believe in giving my best and if I cant, I will not commit. How your perceptions of yourself are similar and different from the perceptions of the person with whom you discussed your assessments. In my discussion with my friend about my assessment of my leadership characteristics I realised that she is someone who is highly confident and proactive. It is her energy and confidence that rubs off on me and I am sure which would rub off on others too. I believe this is what I lack, the ability to pull off confidently. Because I believe if we dont believe ourselves people will not believe us. Moreover when we are leading a team of people we cannot look doubtful, we must look like a group of people who have the ability to say, it will be done. One thing that was missing in my friend which I believe I have and which I believe is extremely necessary is the ability to articulate thought processes and communicate in the manner that people understand. I can understand the level of the person opposite to me and get down to his level and explain a task to him. In an organization employees require leaders to be understanding and communicate requirements without ambiguity to avoid mishaps. Good leaders are patient and tolerant of ambiguity. Both my friend and I possess this I believe. She has the sanity of mind to handle tense situations calmly. We think things through without trying to lose focus. No one wants a hypertension leader especially when crisis hits. How your style could affect your relationship with others, particularly your work relationships. Consider its influence on how you see and relate to others, how others reacttoward you, and implications for the kind of work you prefer. I am a mix of authoritarian and democracy. I tend to take control when needed as well as let go when I can trust the ability of the person I am dealing with. This allows me to analyse peoples abilities and note it down so that I can know who I can entrust what kind of responsibilities to. I have very high ideals and believe in quality. I am someone who does not personally like to compromise on quality. This sometimes comes out in my dealing with others. Some who are as enthusiastic as me take it well and try to attain that perfection. However, unfortunately a large number of people are mediocre which makes it difficult to handle certain situations with me. Most people work for the heck of it, I work because I want to be of help to the organization I am working for. Considering the leadership qualities I possess I must try to strengthen my skills by surrounding myself with people who are as energetic as me and people who possess a high standard of value. I believe growing with like- minded people would help me move forward in the right direction and be of help to a large number of people who look for honesty and proactive attitude. One of my major weaknesses which is also partially my strength is that I desire quality therefore I press on towards that standard. However the work of a leader is not to find people who possess leadership skills but to make them develop those skills. A leader trains people to be leaders wherever they go. Therefore I need to make a shift in the way I try to attain quality. Providing training, counselling and keeping close communication with those I work with may slowly eliminate my weaknesse. Given this information, what can you do to take advantage of your strengths and minimize your weaknesses as a manager/leader? What barriers and opportunities exist for the implementation of your personal leadership plan in your student/professional life? Criteria I believe certain barriers internally and externally can affect the implementation of my leadership plans such as: Firstly, I try to wait everyone to agree to my plans before implementation. As a leader we must move on whether someone believes in our decisions or not. The attribute of risk- taking is a major prerequisite of a leader. Secondly, I try to tackle everything at once since I do not like failure. A leader must be patient with oneself only then can it deal with situations in the best way to give it closures. I have been placed in an organization where I can be of help through my energetic and proactive skills in bringing excellence to my institution. My willingness to do something and teamwork will help build a good plan for excellence in my area of activity here. Demonstrate a willingness and ability to engage in self- reflection. This characteristic has been transferred to me as well. Throughout my academic years I have been someone who has maintained honesty irrespective of the consequences. Let me share a small story about my life in college. My friends wanted to watch a movie and I was not a big fan of movies however on their insistence I still decided to go but I wanted to be honest and inform my teachers so I went to the staff room of the Political science department and told my lecturers that I would miss classes for the rest of the afternoon as I am going for a movie. My lecturers were glad about my honesty and allowed me to go. This attitude of honesty has influenced most of my friends around in college. I have recognized that I need to be more flexible about my flaws and others. I have come to understand that perfection is built over time with the help of training and practice and each one of us need to go through that process. Combahee River Collective in the 1970s The Combahee River Collective, a Boston-based organization active 1974 to 1980, was a collective of black feminists, including many lesbians, critical of white feminism.  Their statement has been a key influence on black feminism and on a social theory about race.  They examined the interplay of sexism, racism, economics, and heterosexism. As  black feminists and lesbians, we know that we have a very definite revolutionary task to perform and we are ready for the lifetime of work and struggles before us. History The Combahee River Collective first met in 1974. During â€Å"second-wave† feminism, many black feminists felt that the Women’s Liberation Movement was defined by and paid exclusive attention to white, middle-class women. The Combahee River Collective was a group of black feminists who wanted to clarify their place in the politics of feminism and to create a space apart from white women and black men. The Combahee River Collective held meetings and retreats throughout the 1970s. They attempted to develop a black feminist ideology and explore the shortcomings of â€Å"mainstream† feminism’s focus on sex and gender oppression above all other types of discrimination, while also examining sexism in the black community.  They also looked at lesbian analysis, particularly that of black lesbians, and Marxist and other anti-capitalist economic analyses.  They were critical of essentialist ideas about race, class, sex, and sexuality. They used techniques of consciousness-raising as well as research and discussion, and the retreats were also meant to be spiritually refreshing. Their approach looked at a simultaneity of oppressions rather than ranking and separating the oppressions at work, and in their work is rooted much of later work on intersectionality.  The term identity politics came out of the Combahee River Collectives work. Influences The name of the Collective comes from the Combahee River Raid of June 1863, which was led by Harriet Tubman and freed hundreds of slaves. The 1970s black feminists commemorated a significant historical event and a black feminist leader by selecting this name.  Barbara Smith is credited with suggesting the name. The Combahee River Collective has been  compared to the philosophy of Frances E.W. Harper, a highly educated 19th-century feminist who insisted on defining herself as black first and a woman second. The Combahee River Collective Statement The Combahee River Collective Statement was issued in 1982. The statement is an important piece of feminist theory and description of black feminism.  A key emphasis was on black womens liberation: Black women are inherently valuable.... The statement includes the following points: The Combahee River Collective is committed to fighting race, sex, and class oppression, and also recognized oppression based on sexuality.  These were analyzed not just as separate forces, but interacting forces. The synthesis of these oppressions creates the conditions of our lives.As black feminists, members struggle alongside black men to fight racism, but against black men to fight sexism.If black women were free, everyone would be free, because that would mean all systems of oppression had been destroyed.The Collective would continue to examine politics, including racism in white women’s feminism.  But eliminating racism in white feminism, they said, was the work and accountability of white women.The members believe in the organization of work to benefit workers instead of bosses. The statement recognized many forerunners, including Harriet Tubman, whose military raid on the Combahee River was the basis of the name of the collective, Sojourner Truth, Frances E. W. Harper, Mary Church Terrell, and Ida B. Wells-Barnett - and many generations of unnamed and unknown women.  The statement highlighted that much of their work was forgotten because of the racism and elitism of the white feminists who dominated the feminist movement through history to that point. The statement recognized that, under the oppression of racism, the black community often valued traditional sex and economic roles as a stabilizing force, and expressed understanding of those black women who could only risk the struggle against racism. Combahee River Background The Combahee river is a short river in South Carolina, named for the Combahee tribe of Native Americans who preceded the Europeans in the area. The Combahee River area was the site of battles between the Native Americans and Europeans from 1715 to 1717. During the Revolutionary War, American troops fought foraging British soldiers there, in one of the last battles of the war. During the period before the Civil War, the river provided irrigation for rice fields of local plantations.  The Union Army occupied a nearby territory, and Harriet Tubman was asked to organize a raid to free slaves to strike at the local economy. She led the armed raid - a guerilla action, in later terms - which led to 750 escaping enslavement and becoming contraband, freed by the Union Army.  It was, until recent times, the only military campaign in American history planned and headed by a woman. Quote From the Statement The most general statement of our politics at the present time would be that we are actively committed to struggling against racial, sexual, heterosexual, and class oppression, and see as our particular task the development of integrated analysis and practice based upon the fact that the major systems of oppression are interlocking. The synthesis of these oppressions creates the conditions of our lives. As Black women, we see Black feminism as the logical political movement to combat the manifold and simultaneous oppressions that all women of color face.

Why is it that the Arabic word Farsi [is] used in daily communications by the English speaking people instead of the English word Persian? I suspect that political correctness may have something to do with it. Since many immigrants from the Middle East refer to the language as Farsi, it may be that journalists and others think theyre being ethnically respectful by doing the same. Until fairly recently the word Farsi was little known to English speakers. Even though the country formerly known as Persia took on its international identity as Iran in 1935, the language spoken there continued to be known as Persian. As Amir points out in the rest of his comment, Farsi is an Arabic version of the original word Parsi in which the letter P was replaced with an F by the Arabic speaking people. . . there is no letter P in Arabic . . . Although the people of Iran have always called their country Iran, English speakers and most other outsiders referred to it as Persia until 1935. The change came at the suggestion of the Persian diplomatic delegation in Berlin. The suggestion may have been prompted by the fact that the word Iran means land of the Aryans and the word Aryan was very popular in Germany at that time. In English the words Persia and Persian have connotations of exotic beauty. The words suggest Persian carpets, Persian cats and Persian literature. The name Iran has less romantic connotations Referring to the Persian language as Farsi is a recent development that not all speakers of Persian are happy with. According to the ruling body for the language, The Academy of the Persian Language and Literature (Farhangestan), the term Farsi is an incorrect term for the Persian Language; an analogy would be requesting that the German language be called Deutsch by those who speak English. Who Killed the Electric Car Essay The electric car introduced in 1996 and was popular in California. The car was quiet small and produced no exhaust; it was a product that was loved by consumers and eco-friendly. This idea of the electric car was not one that was recent in implementing; about 100 years ago there were more electric cars than there were gas cars and they ran really well and quiet. The problem was that after long term use the car would get slower while the gas car was fine as long as there was enough gas in it and they were fast. Over time the air in California is very toxic due to over use of gas cars; 1 out of 4 from the ages of 15-25 have respiratory Issues in Los Angeles; there were 41 stage 1 smog alerts and 19 pounds of Carbon Dioxide was in their atmosphere. Car companies needed a change and wanted to be the first to revolutionize the car industry and introduce the electric car. In 1987 General Motors won the world’s solar race in Australia and started to do research on building a car model for everyday uses. To encourage the advancement in the car industry the state of California passed the Zero Emissions Vehicle Mandate in 1990. The mandate states that if dealers want to sell cars in California some of the cars had to produce no exhaust. This was hard to do because the electric cars were so expensive and many people had to lease the cars because they weren’t up for sale. The car was extremely popular to people who were eco-friendly however the car had very little advertisement and supports started to lose interest. In a survey taken 4000 people said they would try the electric car but when those 4000 were called only 50 ended up signing a lease for the car. The electric car wasn’t doing too good in the sales department. Because the demand seemed to be very low for electric cars GM suffered in sales and because the car was so expensive to produce it was hard to keep on the market. Things changed in 2003 when the government joined the Car Industry to improve the environment. Their involvement didn’t stop the car from being taken off the market and in the early 2000s the Mandate was revoked. At this time all electric car users had to return their car or face legal action and this incredible idea was gone. Nobody knew what was happening to their cars and one day on Californian Green it was shown that the EV was being shredded. It turned out that all these cars faced the same fate. Activist found another location where a few EV electric cars were located and they raised 1. 9 million dollars to buy the cars but there attempts were futile, they had been declined by GM losing their electric cars for good. I think that there was a combination of consumers, GM, and the government who killed the electric car. Consumers could have shone more interest in the vehicle by leasing more of the car and even though the car was expensive it was worth the investment in the long run and had people given the EV a change they would have known that. GM was not very big on advertising for the car and they didn’t really enjoy losing money but it seems as if they didn’t even want to support the EV and go the extra mile to promote it. Self-Determination in Arab Society Since World War Two, much of the developing world has been in transition. One such idea that saw a re-birth was that of self-determination-- be it on the national level or on the personal level. Self-determination on a national level means the independence of a country; on a personal level, it is the determination of one own fate. This can be seen in various ways with our five women characters, Maha, Um Saad, Nadia, Yusra and Suad. In the forward of Daughters of Abraham, Karen Armstrong notes that Islam is "adamantly opposed to the subjection of one human being by another," "insist that men and women were created by God image" and "both sexes have equal rights and responsibilities before God." Strong and resourceful women have played a key role in history and yet Islam has pushed women into an inferior and marginal position, excluding them from full participation in the social, cultural and religious life of the community. Even though figures such as the prophet Muhammad had a positive view of women, relied on them, and treated them as valued equals, some of the most respected sages and theologians have preached outright misogyny. In Rethinking Women and Islam, Amira Sonbol remarks that while the "vision of equality has been one of the mainsprings and central teachings of Islam," it is not extended to women. Rather the numerous Quranic references to equality between man and woman are commonly disregarded, "as the man is given superior moral and physical role as guardian over his wife." It is this type of understanding that is rooted into Arab culture whether or not Arab women have experienced great changes in modernization and industrialization. Therefore, it is imperative that women stand up for themselves and have a sense of self-determination. Self Determination Women were among the first converts to Islam, and the Koran gave women rights of inheritance and divorce that Western women did not receive until the nineteenth century. The Koran does not describe the wearing of the veil of all women as well as seclusion. However, Karen Armstrong notes that three of four generations after the prophet death, Muslims imitated the customs of the Greeks and the Persians in their empire who had long treated their women in this way. Moreover, in her view, Muslims also picked up some of the Christian misogyny and pre-modern legal codes like the Shariah "reduced women to the rank of second-class citizens even though the ideal of the equality of all believers was crucial to the Quran message.

Should we negotiate with terrorists?

Terrorism is a worldwide problem that has devastating effects.   It deprives people of the freedom to travel and enjoy themselves for fear of terrorist attacks.   It subjects innocent people to assaults, kidnappings and murders as they are used as pawns in deadly political games. The question of whether a government should negotiate with terrorists has been widely debated.   Some think it is beneficial.  Ã‚   Others think it does more harm than good.   This paper will explore some arguments both for supporting and against negotiation with terrorists. Arguments supporting negotiation with terrorists Saving lives The most obvious and immediate advantage of negotiating with terrorists is the saving of lives.   If terrorists hold many innocent people hostage in exchange for the fulfilment of their demands, then negotiating with them would most likely result in the expeditious saving of those people. This view supports the idea that everything should be done to save a life. Enables communication, learning and understanding of terrorists. Negotiating enables communication with the terrorists and can therefore lead to a greater understanding of them, as well as a greater capacity to influence them, which may help resolve the conflicts between the terrorists and the government and may even open the way for peace.   Communication with terrorists can also aid in acquiring valuable intelligence that can be later used against them. Al Qaeda appears to be open to negotiation Some experts have argued that Jihad is a defensive doctrine, and the attacks against the West should be understood as retaliatory, provoked attacks which would cease if the West gives in to their demands of reduced military presence in Islamic countries, political and military aid to Israel, and aid to other Middle Eastern countries (Zalman 2007). Ayman Al Zawahiri, Al Qaeda’s deputy leader, has said words that suggest a willingness to negotiate.   He stated in December 2006 that the United States will be negotiating and failing in Iraq, until it is ‘forced to return to negotiate with the real powers’ (Zalman 2007). All solutions must be tried before terrorist groups obtain nuclear weapons An argument for negotiation is that it can put a halt to terrorists before they obtain nuclear weapons. There are constant indications that Osama Bin Laden is searching for nuclear materials (Zalman 2007), and it can be argued that everything should be done, including negotiating, to stop the threat of nuclear war which of course would result in an enormous amount of innocent deaths. Arguments against negotiation with terrorists. More lives are saved in the long-run The biggest reason to not negotiate with terrorists is that it serves as an incentive for terrorists to keep making demands, in this way encouraging more terrorist activity. In the long run, if terrorists know that governments will not negotiate with them, they are unlikely to keep making demands.   For example, during the terrorist school siege in Beslan, Russia did not negotiate with the terrorists.   It can be argued that the people who died in Beslan would not have died if Russia had negotiated with the terrorists and had given them what they wanted.   However, in the long run, Russia disencouraged terrorists from holding schools ransom or trying similar stunts by showing them that such attempts to negotiate are unsuccessful. Negotiation is ineffective and a sign of weakness Terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda are considered to be radical Islamic extremists who seek the destruction of all negotiations with the United States and its allies (Zalman 2007).   Therefore, negotiating with them would be ineffective.   Moreover, it will be seen as a sign of weakness and would encourage them to exploit it. Negotiating with terrorists rewards terrorist activity and destabilizes honest political systems By negotiating with terrorists, a government can be argued to be rewarding terrorists for their violent behaviour, something which should never be done.   If terrorists are given what they want, they will come back and ask for more. Furthermore, negotiating with terrorists erodes and weakens the value of non -violent and pacifist means of achieving political change (Zalman 2007).   Negotiation with terrorists destabilizes political systems by encouraging terrorists to keep making demands, and establishes a dangerous precedent (Zalman 2007). Terrorists may not honor the terms of their demands Terrorists cannot be trusted to comply with the terms of a negotiation.   Truces with terrorist groups don’t always hold, as has been the case with Israel and Hamas, and with Spain and ETA (Zalman 2007). Furthermore, even a truce with a terrorist leader, for example Osama Bin Laden, does not guarantee that the entire worldwide Al Qaeda terrorist group will honor the terms of the truce.   This makes negotiating harder and less effective. Students have many opportunities to perform in both school-sponsored and student-run shows. Seniors are invited to participate in showcases in New York and Chicago in front of industry professionals. Just because Juilliard is an incredible school doesn't mean you should want to go there. It’s a tiny school with a very intense program; that might not be the best fit for all students. Here are some questions to ask yourself when trying to pick one of these bestperforming arts colleges. What Do You Want to Specialize In? If you’re interested in dance, do you want to do ballet or contemporary?If you’re interested in acting, do you want to perform in plays, musicals, or TV and movies? Look into the programs and see what courses are offered.Try to avoid picking a school specializing in ballet if you want to do contemporary dance. Similarly, avoid picking a musical theatre program if you want to act in TV (and vice versa). Hip-hop is awesome. What Opportunities Are There Outside the Classroom? I touched on this above, but be sure togo to a performing arts school where the opportunities align with your interests. For example, if you want to do Shakespeare, then Rutgers, which offers a year abroad in London working at the Globe Theatre, might be a better fit for you than CalArts or Northwestern would be. Extracurriculars are where you get your experience, so make sure you’ll be getting experience in your chosen specialty. What’s the School Like? Is it a big school or a small school? Is it a conservatory or is it at a larger university?If you hate large schools, just don’t choose one.You don’t want to dread being surrounded by tons of students or being forced into cheering for the basketball team. If you get overwhelmed by intensity, a conservatory, such as Juilliard or the Boston Conservatory, might not be a great choice for you, since they're both very small programs where competition is fierce and there's no break from your art since you're surrounded exclusively by other artists. Influences of the Norwegian Language Task A Do you have a rack at home with a CD player, tuner and equalizer? Or do you simply use a discman? If nothing else you may have a walkman? What kind of clothes do you wear? Is it a sweatshirt, jeans and boots? Do you eat fast food, or use a food processor to make something good? The Norwegian language is in relation to the majority of the worlds languages a medium-sized language. Most people are probably wondering whether the Norwegian language will survive in the next thousand years, or will more and more Norwegians go on to use English, so that within a short time, Norwegian will have gone completely into oblivion? So why do we really have all those English words in our language? There are several reasons for it, and thats what Im going to talk about in this article. I could have written 20 pages about the influence in the mass media for example, but I am going to focus on giving you a general overview of English influence instead. One of the reasons of this influence is that we constantly get new products, with English names. Just think of all those words that has followed with computer technology. Take for example: Software, hard drive and back up. Its entirely possible to find a Norwegian name for these new products, but I am not alone when I say that most people in Norway say PC (personal computer) instead of PD (personlig databehandler). English has a strong position as an international language in many areas of society, as in business, in science, in technology and not least in the mass media. American culture dominates in many areas in Norway. Ask yourself these questions: How many times a year do you go to the cinemas? On how many of those visits do you watch American films? Another thing is if you listen to a local radio station, I dont think that its wrong to say that 90% of the music being played is English. Previously it has been German and French who have given us the majority of foreign words, but today, it is English, which gives us the majority. It is said that English words and influence, is the biggest problem for the Norwegian language today. Education in Norway has been far better when it comes to English and it is said that the Scandinavian countries are world champions in English! Language Scientists believe that many English words from teaching at school go straight into the daily speech of youths. In youth environments its easy to be influenced by English. This applies especially to such persons who enjoy music. Pop and rap artists usually sing their songs in English. The young people learn the lyrics and use the English words in their everyday speech. Retail chains have found out that young people buy more clothes if the goods have English names, such as jeans, boots, shirts, and that young people eat chips, snacks and burgers. Advertising and marketing play a key role in the English influence. Words such as hot, happy, fun and sexy are often used to spice up their sentences and make the advertisements more attractive. Earlier all titles of English language movies were translated into Norwegian. Today however most movies keep their original titles, and only a few titles are translated, mainly movies meant for kids. Science is also a contributor to this. The United States has been leading the scientific research in the recent decades, and therefore new discoveries and theories are presented in English. Tons of new products and new product categories are created in the United States and spread worldwide with English names. Moreover, just think of something as ordinary as a car. There are many English words used. We say: gear, clutch, coil, choke, dash, etc. The technological development gives us many opportunities, but at the same time, there is no doubt that new technology and new media represent a risk for small language communities. Also local cultural activities and traditions are in danger of becoming more and more uniform in globalizations wake. Last but not least, we have everyday language and slang. We are messengers spreading the English on to others. One can, for example, say that some new expressions have come with immigration. Another thing is that foreign words are more likely to come into the language of a big city than in a small village. There are several people in a metropolis and, not to mention, several immigrants. These are reasons why the language is affected. We can adapt a lot of English words to Norwegian without major problems. This is especially true for words like stress, sports, bullying, plotting, tackling and smart. These words can easily be used in Norwegian, because they can follow the Norwegian inflection. But just as many words create problems in the system. Many of the words like jeans, thriller, image, seed, slide and walkman, are difficult to adapt to the Norwegian writing rules. We have become so accustomed to English being around us 24 hours a day, that we do not always notice its there. It has become so uncommon making own words, that many people find it funny when people resort to our own language elements and create a new word of them. When the word utblà ¥sing was launched as the replacement for the English word blow-out, there is no denying that some people wrinkled their nose a bit. Yet the word has now been through, and is an example of how words can seem a bit comical at first, but after a short time become quite natural to use. Sitting down in front of the computer at home today, you can communicate with people from all over the world. For only a hundred years ago it would have taken weeks from a letter was sent, to the recipient in another country would receive it. New technology has made the world smaller. Norwegian media are more likely to communicate with the foreign media, and therefore gain insight into foreign news. It is no longer for granted that one must study in Norway, or work here. Norwegians have become internationalized, and we know that there is more than Little Norway. The question on whether the Norwegian language is going to disappear, I personally think no, but it is frightening to think that in the future there may be a completely different Norwegian language than the Norwegian language we speak today. You are influenced by your mother, your father, your siblings, the boss at your job, the TV program you saw last night, the commercial that was shown before the television program you saw , you heard the radio broadcast on way to school this morning, the newspaper you read at the breakfast table. All this has given you English influence, perhaps without you even thinking of it. The world community has an impact on how language changes, and as long as people in society changes, the language will do the same.

Hamlet and Oedipus Rex: The Birth of Kings Two plays, "Hamlet", written by William Shakespeare and "Oedipus Rex", written by Sophocles share a common bond of illusion and innocence. The protagonists in both plays appear at the beginning only to have changed so that reality has broken through the illusion with less than desirable results for either. In these two plays, two kings must leave their innocence behind as the truth leads them first, to enlightenment and then to their downfall. This is a battle between the light and the darkness, the light being the truth and the darkness being the lie. Throughout the two plays we can see that both are isolated in a world of their own, completely unaware of the truths surrounding them. In Hamlet's case, growing up under the loving care of his parents, he believes that his father died of natural causes. Or, in Oedipus' case, the main character thinks that he has escaped Apollo's prophecy that decreed that he would grow up and murder his father, the king, and marry his mother, the queen. This eventually leads to the point at which both have their "eyes" opened to the reality surrounding their "illusionary" worlds. Hamlet is approached by the ghost of his dead father who reveals that his own brother, Hamlet's uncle, murdered him. Oedipus Rex discovers the truth when the blind prophet, Teiresias accuses him of being the one who murdered King Laios therefore fulfilling his destiny in which he had sought to avoid. In the end, the actions taken by both lead to their downfalls in different ways, death for Hamlet and loss of vision for Oedipus Rex. In the beginning, we see Hamlet living in an illusion blocking him from seeing what is really there. Hamlet is under the belief that his father died of natural causes and nothing more. As he comes to realize the truth, he leaves behind the safe harbor of innocence and naïveté and enters the uneasy world of adulthood and experience. Standing within his castle, he makes a speech to himself and to God commenting on the quickness in which his mother married his uncle. It is at this point where the beginning of the end of his innocence starts. He believes that by marrying his uncle, his mother betrayed his father. By doing that, the illusion that his parents had the perfect union is shattered forever. In the play, Hamlet says, "Must I remember? Why, she would hang on him. As if increase of appetite had grown. The Motives for Holding Inventory Explained

In the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, retailers stock their inventory with dozens of Christmas items in anticipation of the holiday rush. When Christmas has passed, the store is left with Christmas items that did not sell. To make room for the next calendar holiday, the retailer will sell their Christmas overstock at extreme discounts. Whatever doesn’t sell will be restocked in inventory for the next Christmas season. The retailer is able to get a jump-start for the next Christmas season by placing last year’s Christmas inventory out in October. A good business operation understands that there will be times when holding inventory becomes crucial in their success. From not wanting to spend additional funds on restocking, to preparing for fluctuations in market conditions, motives for holding inventory are indispensable in inventory management. There are 4 motives for holding inventory: Production smoothing, inventories as a factor of production, stock-out avoidance, and work in progress (Gregory, 2007). Production smoothing, the first of the four motives, involves preparing for fluctuations in sales, as well as seeking a more economically sound way to continue production. When sales offset production either positively or negatively, inventories will rise or fall. With production smoothing, it is more logical to produce items at a constant rate (Gregory, 2007). The second motive is consideration for inventories as a factor of production. Let’s say that a drama teacher is looking for a Christmas tree in June for his â€Å"Christmas in July† production. The overstock from last year’s Christmas season assists in the retailer not losing business because they restocked Christmas trees that didn’t sell from last year. The third motive, stock-out avoidance, protects a business from contractual risk, as well as lost sales in the event of high demand (Fafechamps, 1997). With contractual risk, both the business and the client run the risk of not adhering to a contract, but in  the way of business, holding inventory provides better odds that the business will have what the client requires in order to conduct business and comply with their contract (Fafechamps, 1997). In addition to this motive, being prepared for unexpected demand is imperative in keeping business. For example, an unexpected freeze in the fall could cause people to shop in droves for firewood. The retailer who does not meet the demand will lose business and retain the reputation of not being sufficiently stocked. The final motive, although not really a motive at all, is work in progress. Any unfinished item in the store must also be counted as inventory (Gregory, 2007). If you have ever walked into a store to buy a specific item and found that the store does not have it in stock, you may avoid the store all together in the future. Dear Hiring Manager, I have enclosed my resume. I am currently enrolled in City University of New York majoring in Education concentrated in Early Childhood. I have over 5 years of experience working in an educational environment with children between the ages 2 and 5.
